Representative Mike Kelly Issues Statement on May Jobs Report

June 1, 2012

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) issued the following statement on the May jobs report released this morning, which showed that the unemployment rate ticked up to 8.2 percent and the economy only added 69,000 jobs, falling significantly short of the 150,000 jobs that analysts estimated would be created:

“May marked the 40th consecutive month that the unemployment rate in America has been above 8 percent. The president’s inability to grow the economy and get Americans back to work is a direct result of his failed economic policies, which have stunted growth, stifled innovation, and sidelined millions of Americans who are anxious to find work.

“It’s hard to believe it’s been two years since President Obama launched his ‘Recovery Summer’ tour, a six-week public relations campaign orchestrated by the White House to celebrate the ‘success’ of President Obama’s signature $1 trillion stimulus program, which he promised the American people would keep unemployment below 8 percent.

“That promise was broken, just as our faith in this president’s ability to lead has also been broken.

“What hasn’t been broken is the American spirit and our belief that we are still the greatest nation in the world, with the natural resources, talent, and determination to make our economy strong again and to renew the promise of the American dream for this and future generations.”
