Representative Mike Kelly Co-sponsors Key Pro-Life Legislation, Set to Speak at March for Life Rally

Washington, D.C. – Representative Mike Kelly (PA-O3) has co-sponsored two key pieces of pro-life legislation designed to end government funding of abortion: the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act and the Protect Life Act. The bills were introduced Thursday with strong backing from House Speaker John Boehner, who said ending taxpayer funding of abortion is one of the highest legislative priorities of the 112th Congress.

“Most Americans are against the public funding of abortion, and I am grateful to the Republican Leadership and the Congressional Pro-Life Caucus for taking a stance against the perverse use of taxpayer dollars to destroy innocent human life,” said Kelly. “I am honored to co-sponsor this legislation and will support all efforts to defend and promote the sanctity of life.”

Sponsored by Reps. Chris Smith (R-N.J.) and Dan Lipinski (D-Ill.), the No Taxpayer Funding for Abortion Act will establish a consistent government-wide prohibition on abortion funding. The Protect Life Act, sponsored by Representative Joseph Pitts (R-Pa.), would amend the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, otherwise known as ObamaCare, to ensure that there is no funding for abortion or abortion coverage provided through the public option. ObamaCare currently does not include a comprehensive prohibition on abortion funding.

“I voted to repeal ObamaCare for many reasons, but one of its most significant flaws is that there isn't specific language in the bill that prevents the taxpayer funding of abortion," said Kelly. “I don’t want to see one cent going from the pocket of a taxpayer into the pocket of an abortion provider as a result of this healthcare law. Most Americans don't want their hard-earned money to subsidize abortion and I’ll do what I can to stop that from happening.”

Representative Kelly will speak at the 38th Annual March for Life rally on Monday, January 24 at        12:00 p.m. He will then participate in the march to the Supreme Court, alongside his wife, children and grandchildren.
