Rep. Kelly Statement on House Action to Fund Government, Support Troops, & Protect Americans from Obamacare

September 29, 2013

WASHINGTON — Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA) issued the following statement today after the House of Representatives passed H.J. Res 59, a Resolution to Make Continuing Appropriations for Fiscal Year 2014, along with two bipartisan amendments which would delay the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) for one year and permanently repeal the law’s Medical Device Tax provision. The House also passed H.R. 3210, the Pay Our Military Act, bipartisan legislation which would ensure that members of the U.S. military are fully paid in the event of a government shutdown.

“Once again the ‘People’s House’ has answered the will of the American people by passing responsible, commonsense legislation to deliver Americans what they’ve persistently demanded from their representatives: a fully functioning government, and protection from the president’s job-killing health care law. Now the Senate and President Obama have a duty to put their pride aside and do what is right for the entire nation. Now is the time for the interests of millions of hardworking taxpayers and families to trump petty politics and stubborn priorities. There is simply no good reason for the president to let the government shut down just so that Obamacare – a law most Americans reject – can carry on as planned.

“In addition to keeping the government open, I was also proud to join my colleagues this evening in acting to guarantee that our brave men and women in uniform are fully paid no matter what happens in the days ahead. Support for our troops should never be a casualty of this president’s stubbornness. We also took action to permanently repeal the senseless medical device tax that Obamacare will impose on manufacturers and importers of life-saving products. This dangerous tax will kill jobs and put patients at risk and should be stopped in its tracks immediately.”

NOTE: Rep. Kelly is a co-sponsor of the Stability, Security and Fairness Resolution introduced by Rep. Tom Graves which would delay and defund the Affordable Care Act for one year while funding the federal government for the entirety of Fiscal Year 2014. He is also a co-sponsor of H.R. 3026, the Armed Services Always Paid Actintroduced by Rep. Louie Gohmert, which would guarantee payment for all members of the Armed Forces during any lapse of appropriations.
