Rep. Kelly Mourns Passing of Margaret Thatcher

Apr 8, 2013

WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA) issued the following statement today in honor of the late Margaret Thatcher, former Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, who passed away earlier this morning.

“Today the free world lost one of its greatest defenders of freedom. Baroness Thatcher will forever be remembered for lifting Britain off its knees at a time when her fearless leadership and iron resolve in defense of liberty were needed most. Thanks to her indispensable political courage and disarming intelligence, she proved that limited government and free market economics are keys to widespread prosperity and national rejuvenation. Her abiding belief in democracy and unapologetic opposition to socialism inspired citizens on both sides of the pond, constantly reminding us with her signature wit, ‘The problem with socialism is that you eventually run out of other people’s money.’ As we celebrate her memory, Americans will never forget her friendship and support as together our nations stood down the Soviet Union and ended the Cold War in victory for the West. As I mourn the former prime minister’s passing, I take comfort knowing that her towering legacy lives on and her example will remain with us forever.”
