Rep. Kelly Congratulates Winners of 2013 Congressional Art Competition

WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) issued the following statement today congratulating the winners of the 2013 Congressional Art Competition from Pennsylvania’s Third District. The annual “Artistic Discovery” Art Competition is a nationwide event, sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives, which allows high school students throughout America to share their artistic abilities and earn recognition for their efforts.

“I had a wonderful time celebrating the visual arts at Slippery Rock this past weekend. I once again extend my heartfelt congratulations to the winners of this year’s competition, especially Rachel Trimble of Seneca Valley High School, who earned the first place prize for her beautiful piece which she titled, ‘Sand Sledding.’ Everyone who participated deserves enormous credit for putting their artistic talents on display for all to see. I am still impressed by how gifted our district’s young people truly are, and admire each of them for creating works of art that truly inspire. Every single piece was unique in its own way, and did great honor to the young artists who crafted them.”

NOTE: All of this year’s participants were honored on April 27, 2013, at the contest’s annual awards ceremony, hosted by Slippery Rock University, which Rep. Kelly attended in person. The first place winner was presented with two round-trip plane tickets to Washington, D.C. in order to attend the National Art Competition awards ceremony, as well as the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the U.S. Capitol Building where her artwork will be showcased for a full year. Additionally, the artwork of the second and third place awardees, as well as the honorable mention, will be displayed in Rep. Kelly’s Washington, D.C. office.

This year’s winners are as follows:

First Place: Rachel Trimble, Seneca Valley High School – Sand Sledding

Second Place: Isaac Black, Hickory High School – Talking to Myself

Third Place: Elise Goldman, Knoch High School – Direct Me to the Sea

Honorable Mention: Andrew Aluise, Seneca Valley High School – The Harvest
