Representative Mike Kelly Issues Statement on FY 2012 Appropriations Bill

Washington, D.C. —U.S. Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) issued the following statement on his vote in support of  H.R. 2055, the Military Construction, Veterans Affairs, and Consolidated Appropriations Act, which passed the House tonight by a vote of 296 to121:

“I am proud to say that, today, politics took a backseat to progress. With overwhelming support among Democrats and Republicans, the House passed an appropriations bill for 2012 that cuts discretionary spending for the second year in a row, something that hasn’t happened in Washington since World War II.

“In addition, the 2012 bill contains zero earmarks and cuts waste by eliminating 42 federal programs. Relative to the 2010 appropriations bill, which contained more than 8,000 earmarks, cost $46 billion more, and did not get rid of one government program, the 2012 bill moves America in the right direction.

“For too long, Washington has been on an unsustainable spending spree, which has left us with a $15 trillion national debt that threatens our economic and national security, and places an unconscionable burden on our children and grandchildren.

“I will continue to work to reduce spending in Washington so we can create a better climate for growth and job creation in America, and restore the promise of the American Dream for future generations.”
