Representative Mike Kelly Announces 2012 Congressional High School Art Competition

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) today released guidelines for the 2012 Nationwide “Artistic Discovery” High School Art Competition sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives. The competition is open to Third District high school students only, however exceptions may be made for schools that have 7th through 12th grades on one campus.

“I encourage all Third District high school artists to participate in this exciting competition,” said Rep. Kelly. “Last year we saw an impressive selection of artwork from an immensely talented group of young men and women, and I can’t wait to see this year’s entries.”

Accepted artwork mediums are as follows:

• Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.

• Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (It is recommended that

charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed.)

• Collage: must be two dimensional

• Prints: lithographs, silkscreen, block prints

• Mixed Media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink, watercolor, etc.

• Computer-generated art

• Photography

This competition rewards talented students for their artistic abilities and dedication. The winning student will have the opportunity to showcase his or her artwork in the Nation’s Capitol and will receive two Southwest Airline tickets to Washington D.C. for the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the Capitol Building. Second and third place pieces will be displayed in Rep. Kelly’s Washington, D.C. office.

How to Submit Artwork:

1. Review the Congressional Art Competition 2012 Guidelines to make sure your art is the appropriate size and medium and also read the instructions below.

2. Complete the Student Information and Release Form.

3. Submit artwork to one of the district offices (to find locations, click here) by 5:00 p.m. on Friday, April 20. If a student does not have the resources to send the artwork to a district office, please call Melanie Brewer at (814) 454-8190 to arrange a pickup.

May Awards Ceremony

Edinboro University will host the awards ceremony for the “Artistic Discovery” Contest on Tuesday, May 1, 2012, from 5:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., at the Diebold Center for the Performing Arts. The artists, their families, teachers, friends, school personnel, and local dignitaries are invited to attend.
