Rep. Kelly opposes Democrats' massive $1.7 trillion omnibus spending bill

December 23, 2022

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Today, U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) voted against the $1.7 trillion omnibus spending package, citing concerns about the overall cost to taxpayers, the lack of border security funding, and the limited time to review and hold hearings on the 4,155-page bill.

"We had just days to review a bill that's more than three times the size of the Bible and costs taxpayers more than a trillion dollars. Although there are some good parts to the bill, overall, I cannot support spending taxpayer money without thoroughly reviewing everything that's inside," Rep. Kelly said. "Democrats control both chambers of Congress and the White House, and still could not pass this bill on time. Voting "no" isn't irresponsible. The way our government rushes to spend taxpayer money without critical oversight is irresponsible. The American people deserve better."

BACKGROUND

  • Democrats are doubling down on inflation -- Over the past two years, Speaker Pelosi and the Democrats recklessly spent more than $3 trillion outside of the normal appropriations process, and their out-of-control spending has been a key driver of inflation.
  • More IRS funding -- $12.3 billion for the Internal Revenue Service on top of nearly $80 billion in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
  • Biden's Border Bailout -- Bails out the administration for its policy-driven crisis at the border. Instead of addressing the root cause of the crisis, Democrats include hundreds of millions of dollars to “manage” President Biden’s Border Crisis yet reduce funding to actually secure the border.
  • Green energy giveaways -- Fails to promote American energy production by taking over $2 billion that is supposed to refill the Strategic Petroleum Reserve with crude oil and giving it to unrelated Democrat priorities.
