In Case You Missed It: Rep. Kelly’s Effort to Protect Americans from Ebola Featured by Pittsburgh News
Rep. Kelly: “Not just America but the world is in grave danger if we don’t get this under control right away”
WASHINGTON — Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA) participated in an interview yesterday with reporter Jon Delano of the CBS affiliate in Pittsburgh (KDKA) as part of a feature on his call for a travel ban to Ebola-affected countries in Africa. The report can be read and watched here.
Excerpts from the feature:
“I think we are playing with something that is so contagious and so deadly that I’m not sure that the stance we are taking is aggressive enough,” U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly, a Butler Republican, told KDKA political editor Jon Delano on Tuesday.
The outbreak of Ebola in the United States has caused some local Members of Congress to take a very strong stance, questioning whether the U.S. government is really doing all that it should.
Kelly has joined other Members of Congress in urging a travel ban on Americans to Ebola-affected African countries, except those engaged in fighting the disease, and a restriction on visas to Africans wanting to enter the United States.
“This disease is so communicable and can be transferred around the world in a matter of hours, I think not just America but the world is in grave danger if we don’t get this under control right away,” added Kelly.
NOTE: On October 7, 2014, Rep. Kelly sent a letter to President Obama urgently requesting information regarding the administration’s handling of the Ebola virus outbreak and details of a comprehensive strategy to stop the virus from affecting Americans. A copy of the letter can be viewed here.
On October 8, 2014, Rep. Kelly co-signed a bipartisan letter to President Obama urging him to take immediate action to prevent an outbreak of the Ebola virus in America by instituting travel restrictions, enhancing airport screenings, and possibly quarantining individuals who have traveled to or from the affected West African countries. The letter can be viewed here.
On October 9, 2014, Rep. Kelly sent a letter to the Secretary of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Sylvia Burwell, and the Director of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Tom Frieden, expressing his deep concern about the possibility of the Ebola virus spreading to Pennsylvania. The letter was copied to Pennsylvania Governor Tom Corbett, and can be read here.
