Erie to Receive EPA Grant for Projects to Improve Presque Isle Bay Water Quality

April 14, 2020

Washington, D.C - Today, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency directed more than $9 million in additional funding to the Great Lakes Restoration Initiative for nutrient runoff mitigation. The city of Erie will receive a grant to address that problem on Lake Erie.

"Storm water runoff poses a challenge for water quality on Lake Erie. This grant will help the city of Erie maintain its shorelines by capturing water and other pollutants that would otherwise flow into Presque Isle Bay and contribute directly to algal blooms. Thank you to the Trump Administration for working with me to preserve Lake Erie's natural beauty and to keep it clean, safe, and accessible for future generations."

Grant Allocation

The city of Erie will receive $336,500 to be used for the following purposes:

  • Install 25 soil cells.
  • Plant 25 new trees.
  • Improvements to existing downtown area trees.

The soil cells are systems that catch storm water runoff and release it into subsoil. This prevents pollutants from flowing directly into Presque Isle Bay.
