U.S. House passes Kelly-led resolution to establish bipartisan task force investigating Trump assassination attempt

WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Tonight, the U.S. House of Representatives passed a H. Res. 1367, a resolution introduced by U.S. Rep. Mike Kelly (R-PA) to formally establish a task force charged with investigating the attempted assassination of former President Donald Trump in Kelly's hometown of Butler, Pennsylvania on July 13. The shooting injured Mr. Trump, killed Corey Comperatore, of Sarver, Pa., and injured two other Pennsylvanians. The resolution overwhelmingly passed by a vote of 416-0.

The bipartisan task force will have subpoena power and will consist of 13 House members. A task force has fewer procedural hurdles than a committee or commission, allowing it to conduct its work more efficiently. Speaker of the House Mike Johnson (R-LA) first announced plans to establish a bipartisan task force last week.

"The goals of my legislation and of this task force are simple: to investigate, detail, and explain the shooting and security breakdowns that tragically killed one person, injured two others, and nearly claimed President Trump's life. We must never let something like this happen again," Rep. Kelly said. "It's important that we don't jump to any conclusions as we begin these investigations. I look forward to working with my colleagues to get the American people the answers they deserve."

BACKGROUND

Kelly, who resides in and represents Butler, Pennsylvania in the U.S. House of Representatives, attended former President Trump's rally in Butler on July 13. Kelly introduced the resolution on Monday, July 22.

Additionally, Kelly has led efforts in Washington this week to honor Corey Comperatore, the Butler County man who was killed during the assassination attempt. On Monday, Rep. Kelly led the Pennsylvania delegation to honor Mr. Comperatore on the floor of the House of Representatives.
