Rep. Kelly Congratulates 3rd District’s National Art Competition Winners

WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) issued the following statement today congratulating the winners of the 2014 Congressional Art Competition from Pennsylvania’s Third District. The annual “Artistic Discovery” Art Competition is a nationwide event, sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives, which enable high school students throughout the United States to share their artistic abilities and earn recognition for their efforts.

“I had an excellent time celebrating the visual arts at Slippery Rock this past weekend, and I once again extend my heartfelt congratulations to the winners of this year’s competition. In particular, I congratulate Jialin Li of Mercyhurst Prep for earning the first place prize for her very impressive piece, ‘Glass Menagerie.’ All of the young artists who participated in this contest deserve enormous credit for putting their talents on display for all to see. Each piece was diligently, uniquely crafted and collectively they represent the amazing creativity which we’re so fortunate to find among our District’s youth.”

NOTE: This year’s contest participants were honored during the annual awards ceremony on April 26, 2014, hosted by Slippery Rock University, which Rep. Kelly personally attended. The first place winner was offered two round-trip plane tickets by Southwest Airlines to Washington, D.C. in order to attend the National Art Competition Ceremony, as well as the ribbon-cutting ceremony at the U.S. Capitol Building where her artwork will be showcased for a full year. The artwork of the second and third place awardees, as well as that of the honorable mention, will be displayed in Rep. Kelly’s Washington, D.C. office.

This year’s winners are as follows:

First Place: Jialin Li, Mercyhurst Prep – Glass Menagerie

Second Place: Abby Morrison, Villa Maria Academy – Cincinnati

Third Place: Victoria Gehrien, Villa Maria Academy – Through the Looking

Honorable Mention: Sophia Tang, Villa Maria Academy – Landscape
