Representative Mike Kelly Calls New EPA Coal Regulations Unrealistic
Washington, D.C. — U.S. Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) issued the following statement on yesterday’s announcement from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) that it will impose limits on greenhouse-gas emissions from U.S. power plants, requiring new coal plants to put in place carbon-capture and storage technology that is not yet commercially available, according to the EPA:
“Despite the fact that nearly half of our nation’s electricity is generated by coal, the Obama Administration wants to impose regulations that will limit production of this accessible and affordable source of energy that tens of millions of Americans rely on each and every day. Yesterday’s new rule places an onerous and unrealistic burden on an industry by requiring it to lower emissions through technology that is not even ready for market. In fact, EPA Administrator Lisa Jackson says the technology won’t become commercially available until sometime ‘within the next 10 years.’ We need to put down the crystal ball and put in place standards that are achievable, fair, and will not force an increase in electricity costs at a time when hardworking Americans can least afford it.”
