2018 Congressional High School Art Competition

Each spring, a nationwide high school arts competition is sponsored by the Congressional Institute and the Members of the U.S. House of Representatives.The Congressional Art Competition is an opportunity to recognize and encourage the artistic talent of our nation in each Congressional district.

Rep. Kelly encourages all high school students throughout the 16th Congressional District to submit artwork for the Congressional Art Competition, an “Artistic Discovery.”

Artwork must conform to these restrictions:

Artwork must be two-dimensional

Artwork can be no larger than 26 inches high, 26 inches wide, and 4 inches deep, including the frame.

No framed piece should weigh more than 15 pounds.

Accepted mediums for the two-dimensional artwork are as follows:

  • Paintings: oil, acrylics, watercolor, etc.
  • Drawings: colored pencil, pencil, ink, marker, pastels, charcoal (It is

recommended that charcoal and pastel drawings be fixed)

Prints: lithographs, silk screen, block prints

Mixed Media: use of more than two mediums such as pencil, ink,

watercolor, etc.

  • Collages (must be two dimensional)
  • Computer-generated art
  • Photographs

Each entry must be original in concept, design, and execution and may not violate U.S. copyright laws. For more information on copyright laws, we recommend you read the Scholastic Guide to Copyright & Plagiarism.

How to Submit Artwork:

  1. Review the Congressional Art Competition Rules & Regulations for Students and Teachers
  1. Complete the 2018 Congressional Art Competition - Student Release Form
  1. Submit artwork to one of the following district offices: by 5:00 p.m. on Friday - April 13, 2018.

*PLEASE NOTE: If a student/school does not have the resources to deliver the artwork OR is simply unable to do so, we would be happy to accommodate and pick the artwork up. Local art professionals will judge all artwork submitted and determine 4 top awardees (1st Place – 2nd Place – 3rd Place – Honorable Mention).

All top honorees will receive a congressional commendation and special recognition at the district ceremony. In addition:

  • Rep. Kelly will display the 2nd and 3rd place artwork, as well as the honorable mention, in his Washington, D.C. office.
  • The artist who is named the 1st place winner will have the distinct privilege of showcasing his or her artwork in the U.S. Capitol, alongside art from Congressional districts across the nation.
  • The winner will also receive two (round-trip) Southwest Airline tickets to Washington D.C., to attend the NATIONAL Art Competition Ceremony on and watch as their artwork is placed on display in the Capitol Building, where it will be on exhibit for one year.

ALL students who submit artwork will receive recognition for their efforts and artistic abilities.
