Representative Mike Kelly Votes to Increase Veterans’ Benefits

Washington, D.C. —Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) issued the following statement on his vote today in support of the Veterans’ Compensation Cost-of-Living Adjustment (COLA) Act of 2011 (S. 894), which would direct the Secretary of Veterans Affairs to increase, as of December 1, 2011, the rates of veterans' disability compensation, additional compensation for dependents, the clothing allowance for certain disabled veterans, and dependency and indemnity compensation for surviving spouses and children:

“Our men and women in uniform represent one percent of the U.S. population. To ensure that the remaining 99 percent of us remain free, they risk life and limb to defend our great nation from those who wish us harm. They carry a heavy burden for all of us, and today the House passed a bill that lets our veterans know that we don’t take them or the great sacrifices they’ve made for granted, and that we will never abandon them in their time of need, just as they have never abandoned us in ours.”

The bill would require each increase to be the same percentage as the increase in benefits provided under Title II (Old Age, Survivors and Disability Insurance) of the Social Security Act, on the same effective date. The U.S. Social Security Administration announced in October that the Social Security COLA increase will be 3.6% for 2012.  The Senate has approved the measure and the bill now goes to the president for signature.
