Representative Mike Kelly Issues Statement on August Jobs Report

Washington, D.C. — U.S. Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) issued the following statement on the August jobs report released this morning:

“For the 43rd consecutive month, America’s unemployment rate has been at or above 8 percent. This is a streak of unemployment that hasn’t been seen since the Great Depression, and it is a record of failure that cannot stand.

“Americans are hurting. They are losing confidence in our economy and in their ability to find work. Last month, 368,000 Americans threw in the towel and stopped looking for a job, joining the more than 23 million Americans who are either unemployed, underemployed, or who have dropped out of the labor force.

“We need to restore Americans’ belief in a better tomorrow, not through empty promises and lofty speeches but through commonsense solutions that will actually renew the promise of the American dream.

“For the hundreds of thousands of Americans who have given up their search for work, and for the millions more who have settled for jobs that fail to meet their needs, we can’t only hope for a change, we need to make a change in the failed policies that have led this nation down a path of record debt, deficits, and devastatingly high unemployment.”
