Rep. Kelly: “Now that the House has acted, the ball is in the Senate’s court”

WASHINGTON — Representative Mike Kelly (R-PA), a member of the House Ways and Means Committee, issued the following statement today in support of H.J. Res 59, a Resolution to Make Continuing Appropriations for Fiscal Year 2014, and the Scalise Amendment, which incorporates the text of both H.R. 807, the Full, Faith and Credit Act, and H.R. 2682, a bill to prohibit the funding of the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act. The legislation was approved by the House of Representatives by 230-189 with bipartisan support.

“The Affordable Care Act is proving to be the national nightmare that most Americans feared it would be. After being told we had to pass the law to find out what’s in it, the nation has seen it for what it is: a brutally unfair, unworkable, and unaffordable job-killer. When the American people opposed the law’s initial passage in 2010, they were wrongly ignored. Three and a half years later, a majority of Americans still reject Obamacare and it’s time for their will to be answered.

“Today’s Continuing Resolution respects the will of the American people by keeping their government fully functioning while ending the president’s job-killing health care law through permanently defunding it. It controls spending while guaranteeing that the Treasury maintains our nation’s full faith and credit if ever we reach our debt limit. Now that the House has acted, the ball is in the Senate’s court. The American people are counting on Majority Leader Reid and his chamber to prevent a government shutdown and finally relieve them of Obamacare’s troubles.

“The Obama administration has already confirmed Obamacare’s dysfunction by delaying different parts of the law, including the employer mandate, and approving seven separate repeal bills since its passage. So far, only big businesses and special interests have benefited from these fixes. Now, the president has a golden opportunity to work with Congress to save all Americans from Obamacare, keep the government open, and ultimately achieve the necessary goal of real heath care reform that is patient-centered, not government-centered.”

NOTE: Rep. Kelly is also a co-sponsor of the Stability, Security and Fairness Resolution introduced by Rep. Tom Graves which would delay and defund Obamacare for one year while ensuring the federal government is kept open and functional.
