Rep. Kelly Announces 3rd District’s 2017 National Art Competition Winners

WASHINGTON — U.S. Representative Mike Kelly (PA-03) issued the following statement today to officially announce the winners of the 36th annual Congressional Art Competition from Pennsylvania’s Third District. The annual contest, “An Artistic Discovery,” is a nationwide event sponsored by the U.S. House of Representatives enabling high school students throughout America to showcase their artistic abilities and earn recognition for their efforts.

Statement by Rep. Kelly:

“I congratulate all of the students who entered this year’s fantastic contest. Each young artist deserves enormous credit for putting their talents on display for all to see. In particular, I congratulate Max Schaller for winning the First Place prize and look forward to honoring him in our nation’s capital next month. I also thank MJ and Dennis McCurdy for devoting so much of their time and energy to making the ceremony in Harmony such a wonderful success. As co-chairman of this year's competition, I couldn't be prouder of everyone involved!”                                                                                                                   

This year’s winners are as follows:

FIRST PLACE: Celestial Owl” by Max Schaller from Hickory High School 

SECOND PLACE: "Gold Finch” by Jayme McKay from Hickory High School

THIRD PLACE: Citrus Still Life” by Shane Krizmanich from West Shamokin High School

HONORABLE MENTION: Kindred” by Priya Melonio from Sewickley Academy

About the contest:

  • Each year, members of the U.S. House of Representatives join together to recognize the artistic talents of American high school students in a nationwide art competition.
  • Since the Congressional Art Competition began in 1982, more than 650,000 high school students have participated.
  • This year’s contest participants were honored during the annual Third District awards ceremony hosted on May 13, 2017, at the Bottlebrush Gallery & Center for the Arts in Harmony, PA, which Rep. Kelly personally attended.
  • A total of 47 pieces were entered into the competition. The artwork was judged by MJ McCurdy (an artist/owner of the Bottlebrush Gallery) and four other local artists.
  • The Congressional Art Competition Winners Reception (or National Art Competition Ceremony) will be held on Thursday, June 29, 2017, at the Capitol Visitor Center in Washington, D.C. The co-chairs of this year’s competition – Rep. Kelly and Rep. Marcia Fudge (D-OH) – will each deliver remarks at this event.
  • The 2017 Congressional Art Competition winner from the Third District will attend the above reception with his family and have the distinct privilege of showcasing his artwork in the U.S. Capitol Building. Rep. Kelly will display the second and third place artwork, as well as the honorable mention, in his Washington, D.C. office.
